New bins keep three-quarters of shire’s waste out of landfill

As you may know, the Surf Coast Shire council recently implemented a new waste system.

While it’s a bit of an adjustment, recent statistics are showing that a little bit of effort on our part is having a huge impact - so much so, that this new system is cutting down on rubbish sent to landfill by a whopping 74%!

The green bin for food organics and green organics (FOGO) collection has led to an increase in composted waste, over 30% up from when it was just garden waste.

The purple glass bins have been instrumental in reducing the need for quarried sand, as the glass waste is used to create a sand substitute, reducing land destruction and carbon emissions.

According to the article:

“Waste going to landfill dropped 1,744 tonnes, or 39 per cent, meaning waste going to landfill from the kerbside system is less than it was in 2005 despite significant residential growth since then.

From February to June, the new shire-wide food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collection accumulated 3121 tonnes for transforming into compost, up 37 per cent on previous garden organics-only collection.

The new purple lid fourth bins collected 694 tonnes of glass for recycling into a sand replacement product reducing the need for quarried sand.”

We’re here to help

Here at Kithbrooke Park, we’re fully equipped to work with the new system and committed to helping you help us help the environment. (That’s a lot of helping!)

Spare FOGO bags can be collected from the office, and while you’re in there, arrange a pick up of your garden waste! If you tie them up in manageable bundles, our friendly gardening team will pick them up, and they’ll go in the mulching bins for use throughout the village.

SCRRApp

The Surf Coast Rubbish and Recycling App (SCRRApp) has helped immensely with the transition. The app not only tells you which bins go out when, but it also helps you know what goes in which bin, further reducing the waste that ends up in landfill. (Not sure how to use it? We’ve popped some instructions below.)

INSTRUCTIONS TO DOWNLOAD THE APP

  • Open the iTunes App Store or the Google Play store, depending on your device.

  • Search SCRRApp (Remember the second R!)

  • Download the app, and open it

  • Make sure you allow notifications, and download the bin calendar.

You can find out more about the app here:
